BURLEY BASICS: All the “little” things you need to know!
Morning drop off:
· Students can be dropped off no earlier than 8:00am (unless participating in a scheduled activity or club) at the front entrance to the school on Rose Hill Drive. Between 8am and 8:30am, students must be in the Media Center or participating with a club under teacher supervision. At 8:30am, the cafeteria will open to students.
· If your student is being driven to school, you will need to drop them off at the front entrance on Rose Hill Drive. It is a kiss and ride line! If you need to park and come in for some reason, please park in a designated parking spot in the back lot or on the street AWAY from the front entrance so you do not interrupt the kiss and ride lane.
Afternoon Pick UP:
· Our afternoon pick up is in the back of the school!. Students are not allowed to be dismissed out the front in the afternoon for safety reasons, as determined by the local police department recommendation. Additionally, our cut-off time for dismissal out the front is 3:45pm. There are only two exceptions to this rule: students in need of assistance due to illness, injury or special needs and 8th grade students who are official members of a high school athletic team. In order for the Athletic pass to be issued, we have a form that the high school coach must sign.
· If you call after 3pm we cannot guarantee to get a message to your child (e.g. end of day changes, early pick up, change of bus, etc). End of day plans need to be communicated to us prior to 3pm to ensure they are received by the student.
Late Arrival and Missed Days:
If your student will be late to school, here are the guidelines to help you know what to do when….
o Doctor/dentist visit – bring in a note from the doctor or dentist stating you were there. If you forget to ask for one, the doctor’s office can always fax one to us at 984-4975. Please note that if your student has a note, you do not need to come in with them. They can be dropped off out front and check in with their note in the front office. You are always welcome to walk in with them if you choose, however, it is not necessary.
o Missed bus/overslept/caught in traffic – again, a note from you is all that is needed (but the tardiness will be unexcused).
o Illness – a phone call to the attendance line indicating student name, grade, your name and relationship to student and reason for illness is sufficient. If you call, you do not need to send in a note. If you choose to send in a note, you do not need to call.
o Missed days not due to illness – please call or send in a note indicating why the student was or will be absent.
· How we do attendance:
o Each morning, the teacher will record who is absent and communicate that to the office. Once we cross check those lists with our parent phone calls and notes, we send the absentee list to our teachers. At the same time, our computer system automatically sends out a phone call to parents (whatever number is indicated on submitted papers at the beginning of the year) letting them know we are showing that their student is absent. After 7 absences a doctor's note or a court document is required to make it excused.
EARLY DISMISSALS:
· The best thing you can do is to call or send in a note so that we can write an ‘early dismissal pass.’ We call the student into the office or have the pass delivered to them so that at the appropriate time, they can simply come to the office. Dismissal passes helps us avoid interrupting the classroom to get the student dismissed.
· Parents must come into the office for us to release the student. We need to make sure we are dismissing students to an authorized individual.
PLEASE NOTE: We can NOT dismiss out the front door after 3:45! We will still dismiss your student early, but they will be sent to the back of the school to Parent Pick Up. We will have a staff member in the back supervising pickups after 3:45.
PHONE USE DURING THE DAY:
· In an effort to decrease classroom interruptions, students are only allowed to use the office phone to reach home before school, during lunch, and after school. Our cell phone policy has been updated this year to the following: unless a teacher has given permission for students to take their phones or other electronic devices out for instructional or other purposes, students should have phones and devices turned off and put away. If a phone or device is being used without permission, the following action is taken: one lunch detention for the first offense, two for the second and three for the third. After a fourth time, or if this is repeatedly proving to be a distraction to the instructional environment in any setting, a teacher may confiscate the phone and give it to the main office to hold until a parent can come and retrieve it.
DANCES:
· We will be having our first Back to School dance on Friday, September 18th. All dances are held right after school in the cafeteria. Admission is $4 and there are refreshments available for purchase as well (.75 cents and up). Pick up for the dances is 6:15pm SHARP! Anyone who is picked up after 6:15p may not be allowed to attend the next dance, so be sure to be on time. Pick up is in the bus loop, at the back entrance of the cafeteria. ALL TICKETS ARE PRE-SOLD! When there is a dance we will sell tickets during lunch on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of that week. Students need to keep track of their ticket and bring it with them to gain entry to the dance on Friday. (But don’t worry, we will have a “who’s paid to get in” list to check at the door in the event they lose their ticket!). As well, the ticket will have the student’s name written on it so that if it is dropped, it will hopefully be returned to its owner!
**** Please note that we will NOT be allowing students to purchase a ticket at the door. Advance purchase of tickets allows us to keep track of who is and who is not attending the dance, and smooth the process of dance entry on Friday. This is being communicated to the students throughout the week via morning and afternoon announcements and at lunchtime.
